Slotted nut are used in applications where vibration or motion might undo the locknut. Into one end of the slotted nut have slots cut. Both castle nuts and slotted nut look similar, and can often be used interchangeably because they have almost identical dimensions. However, they are different in that the knob on a slotted nut are from the base of the nut and include the corners, whereas a castle nut looks like a standard nut with triangular portions standing out, but not including the corners of the hex.

Hex Slotted Nut is cut across the center of the flats of a hex nut. These slots are useful to secure a safety wire or cotter pin to a fastener with a drilled hole. Hence this creates a secure hold to stop loosening between the nut and the fastener. Stainless Steel Castle Nut is often used alongside a bolt or a threaded rod that feature a pre-drilled hole, where a cotter pin can be used to secure the fixing and prevent movement. It is often referred to as slotted nuts, from a technical perspective, slotted nuts differ slightly from castellated nuts. It is formed with a round section at the top where the slots are located. It is used in low-torque applications, such as holding a wheel bearing in place. DIN 935 Castle Nut has structural uniqueness which allows them to be used in mechanical and automotive applications where positive locking is required, like holding a wheel bearing in place. It is also used as a safety nut for other element of designing applications.

Castle Nuts are similar to a slotted nut with the following exception: the slots are cut into cylindrical portion that is equal in length to the slot depth and slightly smaller in diameter than the hex width. The slots are for the insertion of a cotter pin to secure the nut when used with s drilled shank fastener. The slotted and castle styles are both interchangeable with the slotted design now the preferred style. These nuts can also produced with “Left Hand” threads!
